The Carroll Trail ran through the Little Belt Mountains right about where Highway 12 exists now. This sign has been placed here to commemorate its significance and the people who forged it.

Historic Points

Carroll Trail

Wagons West

The sign commemorating this notable trail is located 2.5 miles east of Checkerboard, Montana on Highway 12 in the Little Belt Mountains. In approximately 1870 this wagon trail was used for military and business operations from the Missouri located near the James Kipp Recreational Area on Highway 191 to Helena, Montana. This trail was only used until the year 1883, when the Northern Pacific Railroad caused the route to be unnecessary.

While you are stopped reading this sign, you will find yourself in between the Castle Mountains and the Little Belt Mountains. Nearby is the Bair Reservoir and lots of great 4x4 trails leading leading into both ranges.
